Walking On Water

In the third episode of the Following Jesus animation series, Peter steps out in faith to get to Jesus.

Imagine the scene: you’re in the middle of a lake, in a fishing boat with your friends. It’s dark and stormy, and you’re rowing furiously to get to the other side. Suddenly you make out something coming towards you on the water. You gradually realise as you squint into the pouring rain: it’s a person, walking on the water – it’s Jesus! What would you do if this happened to you? Would you be mesmerised? Amazed?

When the disciples recognised their teacher Jesus, walking towards them on the waves, they were terrified: “It’s a ghost!” they cried. Peter though, did something crazy! Stepping out of the comfort of the boat, he himself was able to walk on the water to meet Jesus, until he became afraid and started to sink.

What was the disciples reaction to this event? – ‘They worshipped him, saying “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Possible Discussion Questions

  • We may not have to walk on water like Peter, but how can we also ‘step out in faith?’
  • Are there any areas of your own life where you need to step out of your comfort zone, as Peter stepped out of the boat?
