Christmas Carol Rap - GRYMG

Christmas Carol Rap - GRYMG

The gritty truth of Christmas told in a rap remix of a classic Christmas carol

This remix of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen unpacks God’s plan to rescue helpless humanity. The mix of the traditional carol with the rap works really well. The rap is full of really helpful lines such as: “This is upside down, come and meet the king who put aside the crown.” The rap element unpacks how this king came to rescue human kind.

Here’s the two stanzas of the rap. You can read along as you listen.

Rap - Verse 1
Mary, manger, donkey, snow
This is a picture you know, you’ve got the postcard at home
But open the book, I ain’t no wise man I know
But most of the story you just don’t get told

But this is truth, proof God loved the earth,
Approved teenager birth, dirt, hoof and hurt,
Inverted worth... in that worthless back room
Gloomy shack and human womb

This is upside down,
Come and meet the King who put aside the crown,
The same hands that made the skies astounding,
And the tides dry ground clutch straw surrounding.

As angels worshiping the night, men commission genocide.
Mothers that never were meant to cry survive as their offspring die,
War crimes to welcome the lord in,
a refugee born in the battle that’s roaring.

Rap - Verse 2
This the world that God is restoring,
His essence in a baby, "Oh come let us adore him"
It’s himself that he’s outpouring,
seeing imperfection, h
ealing our infection

Unpeel what’s concealed, the missdirection has
Conned us - w
e’ve all failed the inspection of conduct,
And now it’s debt collection,
We can’t compare, we've none spare, escape is beyond us.

But there's a plan
Baby boy deployed to help helpless man
When we weren’t able,
This is the fable - God in a stable,

Abraham, Isaac on a table,
Cornered ram, child in a make-shift cradle,
Spotless lamb slain for a world unstable
Hope began, pain disbands, the Lord God is able.

Lyrics

Solo
God rest ye merry gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Saviour
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r
When we were gone astray
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh tidings of comfort, comfort and joy

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway
This blessed babe to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,

Each other now embrace;
